A glance at the website of the Suffolk Wildlife Trust reveals the high number and dispersed locations of nature reserves. https://www.suffolkwildlifetrust.org/nature-reserves. Below are just a few of our favourites.
MINSMERE near Dunwich - IP17 3BY/26.5 m
This RSPB Bird Reserve embraces woodland, wetland and coastal scenery, rare birds breeding and calling in on their migrations, shy wildlife like otters, the booming call of bitterns in spring, beautiful bugs and colourful wild flowers in summer.
LANDGUARD NATURE RESERVE Felixstowe
This windswept shingle spit covering 81 acres has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and supports over 440 species of wild flowers and grasses. Immediately alongside the nature reserve the Landguard Bird Observatory has been recording bird migration since 1982. As a result of this work Landguard is now recognised as a very important landfall for migratory birds. Felixstowe is about 16 miles from your lodge.
HAVERGATE ISLAND Orford
Small island in the River Ore famous for breeding avocets and terns, which can usually be seen during spring and summer. In autumn and winter, the island provides a haven for large numbers of ducks and wading birds. Havergate is also a great place to see brown hares at close range.
Access is by boat only from Orford Quay and the boat trip to the island helps you really feel you're getting away from it all. Pre-booking is essential. Contact the RSPB Minsmere nature reserve on 01728 648281. Orford is about 19 miles from your lodge.
